How does a fireplace blower fan work?

Friday, July 02, 2010

So you love sitting in front of your fireplace to admire the beauty of the flames and to feel the warmth of the fire? Unfortunately, you sometimes think that the heat produced could be used more efficiently? A fireplace blower fan, whose primary function is to distribute the heat produced from the fire, will solve this problem and allow you to enjoy the warmth in other rooms of the house.  Fireplace blower fans increase the efficiency of your fireplace by improving warm air circulation and distribution.

Heat resistant tubing
A fireplace blower fan’s primary component is specially designed heat-resistant tubing that acts like a conductor for the heat generated in the fireplace. The fire is built directly over the tubing allowing the fire to heat the air inside the tubes.

Air intake

When the fireplace blower is turned on, an air intake device pulls cold air from the room and pushes this air into the tubes. The cold air in the tubes is quickly heated by the fire.

Warm air distribution

Once the air in the tubes reaches a certain temperature, the fireplace blower starts automatically pushing the warm air out of the tubes and into the room. The result is that you are able to benefit from the heat emitted naturally from the fire itself, as well as the heated air that is pushed from within the tubes.

Temperature control

To keep your rooms from getting too warm, many fireplace blowers are temperature controlled. The fireplace blower takes the air that has been heated in the tubes, to the temperature set by a thermostat and re-circulates this warm air back into the room. Much as any furnace, once the desired temperature is attained, the air blower will automatically shut off. When the temperature drops a few degrees below the desired temperature, the blower will automatically turn itself back on.

Blower

By design, a fireplace blower will not affect the combustion rate of your fire, nor the quality of the fire that is produced. The blower is solely used to distribute warm air throughout your home.
